PP 1: Personal Media Usage
Media plays a huge role in my daily life, personally and academically. My habits revolve around a mix of devices and platforms, allowing me to stay connected, informed, and entertained throughout the day.
Every morning, the first device I get on my phone. I typically spend about 30 minutes scrolling through social media platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok to catch up on news, trends, and updates from friends and influencers. This helps me ease into the day while staying informed about current events and pop culture. I also use my phone to check emails and any notifications from my professors, making sure I am caught up on everything.
I rely heavily on my laptop during the day, especially when attending classes or studying. This includes attending virtual lectures, accessing course materials on platforms like Blackboard, researching for assignments, and writing papers. I often use online databases and news outlets to gather information for my communications major, and I frequently analyze media content for class projects and presentations.
Outside of class, my laptop is also a primary source of entertainment. I spend about 1 to 2 hours daily streaming shows or movies on platforms like Netflix, and Hulu. Also, I use Spotify to listen to music while studying or relaxing, which adds another hour of media consumption to my day.
The positive effects of media in my life are significant. It keeps me informed, helps me stay connected with friends and family, and provides endless resources for learning and entertainment. Media also plays a crucial role in my education, offering tools and platforms that make studying more accessible and engaging. It allows me to express myself creatively and stay updated on opportunities related to my field of study.
There are also negative effects associated with media use. The constant exposure to social media can sometimes lead to feelings of anxiety or inadequacy, especially when comparing oneself to the seemingly perfect lives portrayed online. A lot of screen time can cause eye strain and disrupt sleep patterns. The overwhelming amount of information available can also make distinguishing between credible sources and misinformation challenging, which is particularly concerning in an era of ‘fake news.’
To wrap up, media is an integral part of my daily routine, shaping how I communicate, learn, and entertain myself. While it offers numerous benefits, it must be mindful of its potential drawbacks and strive for a balanced, healthy relationship with media.
